Michael
Irwin is a Consultant Traffic Accident Investigator, residing in Newcastle upon

Before joining the Police Service Brendan Shardlow spent almost 2 years employed
by Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Co. Ltd. as an Area Sales representative. He served
with the Metropolitan Police, London between January 1972 and October 2001,
joining the Traffic Division in August 1975. In September 1988, he became a full
time Accident Investigator. He is a full Member of the Institute of Traffic
Accident Investigators.
He has presented evidence in the Central Criminal Court and other Crown Courts
and has also presented evidence in many different Coroners and Magistrates
Courts as well as at the Royal Courts of Justice and County Courts in Appeal and
civil litigation cases.
From September 2000 until October 2001I Brendan was the Senior Collision
Investigator for the North West area of London.

Ian Soulsby is a vehicle examiner residing in Melksham Wiltshire. Ian initially
trained as a Master Shipwright and Engineering Draughtsman. He worked for the
Ministry of Defence at both Portsmouth and Bath. He worked on both surface ships
and submarines in the areas of radar, sonar, countermeasures and weapons systems
before leaving to become a Director of a Plant Hire company. He later joined the
Wiltshire Constabulary serving as a Traffic Patrol officer and qualified Vehicle

Derek Hance is an Accident Investigator & Vehicle Examiner residing in South
East London, near the Kent Border. He served over 30 years with the Metropolitan
Police Service, more than half of which was as a Traffic Patrol Officer. From
1991 to his retirement in 2003 Derek was a full time Accident Investigator for
the Metropolitan Police South East Area. In his last two years he was promoted
to Senior Accident Investigator, in charge of a team of six full time Accident
Investigators and responsible for the quality control of expert reports.
During
his Police Service Derek became a class one advanced police driver, police
motorcyclist and was trained to drive all classes of heavy goods and passenger
carrying vehicles. Throughout his service he undertook numerous training courses
in or allied to Accident Investigation and Vehicle Examination and has been
considered an expert in these fields for many years. He has extensive experience
in: the scientific examination of road accident scenes; the examination of crash
vehicles and analysis of damage; the preparation of detailed reports; and the
delivery of expert testimony to Courts and other Tribunals.
In
July 1996 Derek gained his postgraduate degree at the Middlesex University,
Master of Arts (with Distinction) in Accident Investigation (Work Based Learning
Studies).
Since
retirement Derek has worked as an Independent Consultant in Accident
Investigation. He also assists with the training of police officers in Accident
Investigation at the Technical Training Wing of the Metropolitan Police College
at Hendon.

served with the West Midlands Police, between October 1982 and September
2000, being retired on medical grounds having sustained very serious
injuries whilst on duty, he joined the Traffic Department in 1990. He was
trained in the operation of weighbridges and was authorised to weigh
vehicles and trailers, he was also trained in the use all of the speed
detection devices as used by the West Midlands Police at that time. In 1991,
he was trained to become a Vehicle Examiner. In 1992 he was trained and
became an Accident Investigator, in 1994 he passed the Advanced City and
Guilds examinations in Road Accident Investigation; in 1997 he passed the
advanced City and Guilds examinations in Motor Vehicle Examination. He is a
full Member of the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators. In 2002 he
was awarded Licentiateship to the City and Guilds Institute of London in the
Field of Traffic Accident Investigation.
He has presented expert evidence in Crown Court as well as many different
